Red Cross launching blood drive dubbed "Missing Types"

New York Blood Center declares blood emergency across Tri-State

"Every 2 seconds someone on the USA needs blood", said Congressman G.K.Butterfield during the announcement of the missing letter campaign.

"Everyday thousands of patients across the United States rely on generous blood donors for critical blood transfusions", said Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the Red Cross. Right now, the blood bank's stock is below that minimum, according to the release. Last year's blood drive gathered the support of 67 donors, including 17 first-time donors.

"There are a number of benefits to be had also by the donor, including improved heart health, enhanced production of new blood cells and reduced cancer risk". You have the power to give them life!

The campaign asks organisations to remove the letters A, B and O, symbolising the missing blood types with the same letters, from their logos or names for a week. It is easy to get involved in Missing Type during National Blood Donor Week using free social tools available on blood.ca/share.

"As blood donors, we can make sure there is never a missing blood type", says Rick Prinzen, Canadian Blood Services' chief supply chain officer and vice-president of donor relations. "We hope you will consider donating blood and helping touch lives as our family's lives were touched during my husband's illness". "That's how often people have to donate to give that blood for other people", Pucel said.

Three-quarters (74 percent) of the public underestimate how frequently blood transfusions occur.* Most people perceive blood is needed in the USA every 15 minutes or even every hour or two hours when in fact, every two seconds, someone in this country needs blood.

Eligible donors can enter the drawing a second time when they register for a second donation during the blood drive period. It's not just blood: it's keeping families together.

The app now allows donors to book appointments, access maps of all the blood drives across the country and share via personal social media platforms, and as one of the coolest features yet, it sends a special notification to Whole Blood donors when their blood has been used to help save a life - in real time.

"Adequate supplies of safe blood can only be assured through regular, voluntary, unpaid donations".

Our appeal happens to coincide with World Blood Donor Day, which is Thursday, June 14th, and celebrates volunteer blood donors for their life-saving gifts.
