Senate Leadership Blocks Up-Or-Down Vote On Corker Tariff Amendment

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) ripped his colleagues on the Senate floor today for blocking a vote on his amendment to the defense reauthorization bill that would restore congressional oversight on the president's tariff decisions in which he bypasses lawmakers by citing national security.

He argued that his fellow Republican senators overwhelmingly support the legislation, dubbed the "Corker Amendment", but they have decided not to bring it to the floor out of fear of angering the president.

Senator Corker said, "I haven't heard a single senator on our side that hasn't expressed concern to the president directly about what's happening with tariffs".

"I can't believe it", Corker exclaimed.

"'We might poke the bear' is the language I have been hearing in the hallways", he said.

"Because senators, United States senators who are elected by the people in their state, don't want to cast a tough vote, they block everybody from voting", Corker said.

Cody Fenwick is a reporter and editor. A lot of them would vote for it if it came to vote, but no.

Corker's amendment would have pared back Trump's authority under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to impose tariffs on national security grounds without obtaining Congress' consent. They start off by inculcating some sense of group loyalty, then they are taught to disregard any external source of information - and, say, instead get their news from a source that is working for the cult, like Fox News - and pretty soon, they have lost any capacity to make independent judgments. People can vote up or down.

Corker last week was told that his amendment may have a so-called "blue slip" issue should it reach the House of Representatives, a technical issue that requires revenue-related legislation to originate in the House. He also asked that his amendment be called up and made in order so the body could vote up or down on the merits of the amendment.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference after his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore June 12, 2018. But the senator leading the defense debate, James Inhofe of Oklahoma, said Tuesday he wouldn't go along because it risked holding up Pentagon funding and wasn't directly related.
