White House aide apologizes for 'special place in hell' comment

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has apologized for saying Justin Trudeau earned "a special place in hell" with his response to Donald Trump's complaints about US-Canada trade.

"My job was to send a signal of strength", he said at a Wall Street Journal CFO Network conference in Washington on Tuesday. "And I think what people need to do at this moment is take a step back", Hassett said.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau said Saturday as the gathering concluded after Trump had left early for the Singapore summit with Kim Jong Un.

The comments dashed hopes that Trump had moved on from what he believed to be was a "dishonest" action by Trudeau.

"Obviously we support the continuing efforts by the President on North Korea", the Canadian prime minister said.

The Trudeau hate began after the Prime Minister held a press conference and told reporters that the new USA tariffs on steel and aluminum are "kind of insulting" and that Canada "will not be pushed around".

Merkel's statement came after Trump refused to endorse the final communique of the G7 summit and imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from Europe, Canada and Mexico, sparking fears of a possible trade war. "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did", said Navarro, referring to the joint press conference that is routinely held at the end of the annual events.

Note that Navarro expressed regret only for the language, not the message, which is that Trudeau had better show President Trump more deference in the future. "I mean the problem is that we're dealing with a schoolyard bully and his henchmen", he said. He delivered them the day after Trump himself criticized Trudeau and shortly after Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, insulted Trudeau himself.

Merkel, whose office over the weekend released a photo of leaders and aides which illustrates the divide between Trump and his allies, said she had "tried hard to find a compromise and we fought hard for it. this was an important announcement". No, I have a good relationship with Justin Trudeau.

Kudlow's comments were quickly followed by Director of the White House National Trade Council Peter Navarr, who said there is a "special place in hell" reserved for anyone who double-crosses Trump.

"There are things we can't control, and Mr. Trump is one of them, but we can control tax policy, for instance; regulatory policy, for instance; and we are now less competitive".

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada", Trump said.

According to Canada Soccer, today's vote marks the first time three nations have been selected to co-host a FIFA World Cup and the first time the FIFA World Cup will be played in North America in 32 years.
