Speaking to the BBC, his daughter Lucy said, "It is a message of peace and hope, about unity and the need for us to live together in harmony on this planet".

Guests from the worlds of science and showbiz descended upon Westminster Abbey to pay tribute to Professor Stephen Hawking at a memorial service in honour of the scientist.

The track being beamed into space will feature Hawking's voice set to music and has been written by Greek composer Vangelis.

Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Charles Darwin are buried in Scientists' Corner, and it is between their graves that Hawking's ashes were buried beneath a stone seal engraved with his most famous equation describing the entropy of a black hole with the words, "Here lies what was mortal of Stephen Hawking, 1942-2018".

"This is a attractive and symbolic gesture that creates a link between our father's presence on this planet, his wish to go into space and his explorations of the universe in his mind", Hawking's daughter Lucy says in a statement, reports the AFP.

Approximately 25,000 people applied to attend the Service of Thanksgiving, according to the Hawking family, but only 1,000 people from 100 countries were given tickets, the BBC reported.

But at the same time his ashes were lowered into the ground, his voice was beamed from Earth thousands of light-years away toward the nearest known black hole in the universe.

Recent burials of prominent scientists inside Westminster Abbey include Ernest Rutherford, a pioneer of nuclear physics, in 1937, and Joseph John Thomson, who discovered electrons, in 1940. Every person at the ceremony will receive a CD with the piece of music, which will be released to the public at a later date. Astronaut Tim Peake read from "Queen Mab" by poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, which evokes the wonders of the universe.

Hawking, who died in March, revolutionized the scientific understanding of black holes - and won the hearts of people across the world with his tireless scientific advocacy. He was also immortalized in pop culture, with appearances in "The Simpsons" and "The Big Bang Theory".
