CBS is expanding Star Trek with five-year deal for new shows

New 'Star Trek' Series Developed by Alex Kurtzman — Picard Returns?

New showrunner Alex Kurtzman just inked a deal with CBS Television to develop even more Star Trek shows, including a series that might bring back Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. CBS has allegedly tasked Kurtzman with growing the franchise's television presence, an effort said to include things like a mini-series and an entirely new TV show. Production on Season 2 is under way, with Kurtzman directing the premiere.

Given that the deal has only recently been struck, and Kurtzman's time being devoted to Discovery, there's nothing official yet about what shape those other potential shows might take.

Any thoughts on what sort of new Star Trek series/mini-series you'd like to see CBS tackle during this great Trek expansion?

The series will be written and drawn in the spirit of the 1970's Star Trek: The Animated Series and the 1980's original Transformers series.

Under the agreement, CBS Television Studios has exclusive rights to produce all television content created and developed by Kurtzman's company, Secret Hideout. Among the rumored shows are a series set at Starfleet Academy from Runaways showrunners Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz and a limited series based on the famous Wrath of Khan movie from 1982. "His talent, taste and ability to shepherd a successful project is unparalleled".

Kurtzman is a longtime Trek veteran, and co-wrote both the 2009 Star Trek film and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. Additionally, CBS is planning an animated series and at least one more limited series, whose details are now being kept under wraps. THR adds that one project might have Patrick Stewart reprising his Star Trek: The Next Generation role as Capt. Pickard, though that deal is far from done. With the man behind the mature, fresh, engaging return of Star Trek behind the wheel, you'd expect it to be a Star Trek for the ages. The storyline will begin in the Star Trek universe, when the Enterprise responds to a distress beacon near the border of Klingon space, only to find a dilithium mine under attack from 20th century-era jets and helicopters; although of course we know they are much more than that.
