Cricket England score ODI world record 481 6 v Australia

Alex Hales

Eoin Morgan, England's ODI captain, became the country's highest run-scorer in this format during a 21-ball fifty - the fastest by any England batsman in terms of balls faced - on his way to 67.

By contrast, this was England's biggest victory in the format, topping their 210-run win against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 2015.

But for a depleted Australia this was a chastening eighth loss in nine matches at this level against England, the world's top-ranked ODI side.

England's Adil Rashid (centre) celebrates taking the wicket of Australia captain Tim Paine. "That's as hard a day's cricket as I've had in 16 or 17 years".

Bairstow (139) and Jason Roy (82) were England's first two driving forces in an opening stand of 159 which was broken only when the latter was run out by an excellent throw from D'Arcy Short in the leg-side deep, trying to steal a tight second run in the 20th over.

Morgan, who will lead England into a home World Cup next year, said it was a complete display.

England might even have scored 500 had not Hales and Morgan - returning after being ruled out in Cardiff with a back spasm - been dismissed off successive deliveries to leave them 459 for five off 47.3 overs.

In what was desperate attempt to save runs, Australia used as many as eight bowlers in the match but to no respite.

Bairstow had two scares, overturning an lbw verdict on 27 sweeping at Ashton Agar and escaping a very hard chance to Marcus Stoinis at deep mid-off three runs later off Andrew Tye, but he powered on to a 69-ball century.

Four balls later the Yorkshireman was dropped by Marcus Stoinis who grassed a catch on the run at deep long-off from Andrew Tye when he was on 32. AJ Tye went wicketless for 100 runs from nine overs and Jhye Richardson boasted the best figures of 3-92.

Australia, however, were gifted a wicket when Roy ran himself out going for a needless second run.

But Bairstow was not to be removed and reached his century off just 69 balls.

Next ball Morgan, whose tally of 5,443 ODI runs for England in 180 matches has now surpassed Ian Bell's 5416 in 161 - also holed out.

Bairstow's entertaining innings came to an end when he picked out Richardson in the deep, with Agar finally getting his man 112 runs after he first thought he had him.
