Facebook Fundraiser To Reunite Families Separated At Border Brings In Millions

A 2-year-old Honduran asylum seeker cries as her mother is searched and detained near the U.S.-Mexico border

Asylum seekers rafted across Rio Grande from Mexico and detained, then taken to processing center for possible separation.

Charlotte Willner now works at Pinterest and Dave Willner at Airbnb, according to a spokeswoman for the couple.

The Willners' page is the largest single fundraiser in Facebook's history, said Roya Winner, a Facebook spokeswoman.

A Texas nonprofit working to help reunite immigrant families who have been separated at the USA border with Mexico will soon get millions in donations to help their work.

"This child is my daughter's age. This is the exact face she makes when she's terrified", she wrote.

"I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13 to obey the laws of the government, because God has ordained them for the goal of order. It's never too late to do the right thing". Children can't be held in criminal detention, so they are being separated from their parents.

"Regardless of political party, so many of us are distraught over children being separated from their parents at the border", the Willners said in a statement.

Facebook's top two executives, Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, were among the donors to the Willner's fundraiser, the company confirmed, though it didn't disclose the amount of their donations.

On Tuesday, Dave Willner provided an update and said, "Collectively you have given $4,000,000 in a little more than 24 hours".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions forcefully rebuked critics who fault the Trump administration for the separation of illegal immigrant families at the border, saying that the Obama administration's policies are partially to blame. "We have to do our job".

"I have no better way to describe it than just absolutely stunned and incredibly grateful because the funds that have been raised will enable us to do so much work", said Jenny Hixon, director of education and outreach for the nonprofit. "This administration has a simple message - If you cross the border illegally, we will prosecute you".

In less than four days, a California couple has raised more than $5 million - and counting - through Facebook to help reunite undocumented families that have been separated at the border.

The group is described as "the largest immigration legal services provider in Texas", serving some of the most vulnerable populations. But with over $10 million in donations, the Texas organization is in a good position to begin offering proper legal representation for the children involved.

"We are collectively revulsed at what's happening to immigrant families on our southern border", the fundraiser page said, referencing the news that nearly 2,000 immigrant children have been separated from their parents since the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy kicked off last month. "But there is still something we can do". "In times when we often think that the news can't possibly get worse, it does".
