Ronaldo bust swapped at Madeira airport

Cristiano Ronaldo is on a roll.

The original bust had been unveiled at the airport previous year during its renaming ceremony in honor of the island's most famous son.

Original creator Santos was not informed that his famed work had been removed, but Ronaldo's brother Hugo Aveiro simply shrugged: "If he was taken by surprise, it's not my problem".

But the ridicule has clearly proved too much to bear, with its replacement statue trading a goofy grin for the more po-faced look that Ronaldo - who was born and raised on Madeira - is known for.

A widely-mocked bust of soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo at the airport in his home island of Madeira has been replaced, local media reported on Monday.

But the change has not gone down well with everyone and a petition has been started to bring the old sculpture back.

Over 500 people have signed an online petition to bring back the old statue because it caused such an worldwide stir when it was first unveiled.

The new bust of Portugese star Cristiano Ronaldo at the airport in Madeira named after him.

Madeiran artist Emanuel Santos was tasked with creating the image of Ronaldo and spent three weeks on the project, with the bust unveiled when the airport was renamed in Ronaldo's honour in March 2017.
