Pakistan player tests positive for prohibitive substance

Ahmed Shehzad fails doping test

Shehzad has been in and out of the Pakistan national team since the end of the World Twenty20 in 2016 in India where the team was eliminated in the league stages.

Pakistani worldwide cricketer Ahmed Shehzad on Wednesday (June 20) has been tested positive for a banned steroid, the test of which was conducted ahead of the two-match T20I series against Scotland.

It was a surprise dope test for which the samples were collected during a domestic match that was being played in Pakistan. The PCB is awaiting the results of that test, saying it would be available in the next day or so.

The opener, who is struggling to hit form, may be banned for three months or more if he is found guilty of doping violations, according to PCB's sources. This was confirmed by the PCB on Twitter when it said ICC rules prevented the player from being named until the chemical report was confirmed by the government's anti-doping agency. The PCB will give the cricketer a chance to state his side of the case and to explain himself. Indiscipline has seen him being ignored by the Pakistan selectors time and again and now a failed dope test.

The right-hander last played a Test in 2017 where he was part of Pakistan's squad which finally won a series in the West Indies for the first time. They have chose to reduce the number of players who are awarded a contract from 35 to 25 and at the same time increase the salary offered.

Leading Pakistani journalist Zainab Abbas tweeted, "Ahmad Shahzad has been tested positive for Marijuana - the test was conducted prior to the Scotland series during Pakistan Cup".
