Paramount Rebooting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Filmverse - Again

New TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Movie In Development - Report

It is unclear whether the reported new film would be a sequel following the same continuity of those films, or an entirely new project. The news comes from THR, who reports that the studio is developing a new TMNT movie and has hired screenwriter Andrew Dodge to pen the script. Dodge earned industry attention for his Blacklist script Bad Words, which ultimately turned into the 2013 directing and starring vehicle for Jason Bateman.

However, due to its lower gross, the future of the franchise was put into doubt, with producer Andrew Form saying back in October 2016 there were no new plans for the franchise, but with Jim Gianapulos stepping in as Paramount CEO past year, a push for more quality content across all of the studio's films and franchises has factored into the planning for the Ninja Turtles.

Paramount's two movies are based on the comic by Kevin Eastman and Kevin Laird about wisecracking pizza-loving turtle superheroes named after the Renaissance artists Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo and Donatello, using ninja skills acquired from a radioactive New York City rat. The first movie, simply called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", was released in 2014 and grossed $493 million worldwide while "Out of the Shadows" took in about half that. However, Jim Gianopulos is now at the helm, and its said that he is looking to give the franchise a bold new direction. Odds are we can expect a redesign of the character's looks as well as a new take on the mythos when the Turtles hit the big screen once more. It seems there's a focus on getting the studio's franchises back on track, so it seems unlikely that the studio would just continue what the last film did for a third go round.
