U.K. reviews medical marijuana ban after outcry over sick kids

Licensed medical marijuana producer Aphria is one of the companies with a medicinal

If is determined medical cannabis provides significant medical and therapeutic benefits, then its expected it will be rescheduled for medicinal use.

A spokesman for Ms Caldwell said profits from sales of the cannabis products - which include oils, capsules, powder, gummies, shots and honey sticks - were used to fund Billy's 24-7 healthcare needs, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The move was prompted by the outcry over the case of Mrs Caldwell's 12-year-old son Billy - who suffered from 100 seizures a day - and other children denied cannabis oil to treat their acute illness.

Billy Caldwell's name hit the headlines last weekend when Home Secretary Sajid Javid intervened to allow him access to medicinal cannabis oil following the boy's hospitalization in London after multiple seizures.

The Home Office said in response that "the government has no intention of reviewing the classification of cannabis under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and it will remain a Class B drug" - the middle rung on a three-point scale of illegal drugs.

Billy's mother Charlotte described it as "amazing news" which she applauded.

"It has become clear to me since becoming Home Secretary that the position we find ourselves in is not satisfactory", he said.

She added: "At every stage of this campaign we have mentioned making history and we have mentioned it because it is commonsense". While Caldwell said they'd "achieved the impossible" in regards to the medication's return, she emphasized that the fight was far from over.

The United Kingdom's Home Office has chose to let 12-year-old Billy Caldwell take cannabis oil for his seizures. "We are on the threshold of the next chapter of the history books". "We wish Billy and his family well".

Billy's case provoked calls for a change in the law, with former Conservative leader Lord Hague urging ministers to consider full legalisation of the drug.

Canada's parliament has voted to legalise the recreational use of cannabis, at a time when the UK's lawmakers are coming under increasing pressure to review the law.

The first part, led by the government's chief medical officer, Professor Sally Davies, will weigh the evidence available for the medicinal and therapeutic benefits of cannabis-based medicines, Javid said. "So there are just so many people who must be celebrating today and I'm celebrating with them".

"I will do everything in my power to make sure that we have a system that works, so that these children and these parents can get access to the best possible medical treatment".

"There will be many other people in the United Kingdom with severe epilepsy who are likely to benefit from medical cannabis and provision must be made to stop them suffering brain damage and death from cannabis-treatable seizures", he said.
