Unusual lump on woman's face turns out to be a live worm

A unusual lump that was moving around a woman's face turned out to be a worm under her skin, as told in a case report published on The New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Vladimir Kartashev, a professor of medicine at Rostov State Medical University who treated the 32-year-old woman, published a separate study on dirofilariasis, the name given to the infection, in 2015.

The 32-year-old woman from Russian Federation first noticed a nodule below her left eye, and snapped a selfie to document it. Unsurprisingly, she went to the doctor - but not before taking some selfies to document the lump's movement. The patient recovered completely once the worm was out.

The first noticeable lump appeared beneath her left eye, then moved to the area above her left eye and next appeared on her lip.

The lump transformed into a weird medical case when it started to move around the woman's face.

Two weeks after she noticed the lump, the woman finally chose to have it checked.

The woman is believed to have picked up the parasite when she traveled to a rural area outside of the Russian capital of Moscow, where she was bitten by mosquitoes. An ophthalmologist observed what was called a "superficial moving oblong nodule at the left upper eyelid", and upon further investigation, doctors made a troubling discovery. A physical exam found a lump that had moved from his arm to the back of his hand, which turned out to be - you guessed it - a massive worm crawling around under his skin.

Although it is rare for the parasite to infect humans - it naturally lives in dogs and other carnivores - there are definitely enough recorded cases to make you uncomfortable. However, luckily, these worms can nearly never reproduce in humans, and all symptoms usually disappear quickly if the worm is removed - so if you've noticed any unusual lumps moving around your body after a mosquito bite, you should probably get to a doctor. However, according to the CDC, the worms aren't able to reproduce in humans, so they can't be spread between people.

Doctors diagnosed a woman with a parasitic worm after she discovered a lump moving across her face. She has since made a full recovery.
