ABC orders 'Roseanne' spinoff for fall minus Roseanne Barr

ABC greenlights 'Roseanne' spinoff without Roseanne Barr

About three weeks after ABC abruptly canceled the revival of "Roseanne" following Roseanne Barr's racist tweet, the network has ordered a spinoff - without Barr attached.

The show has received a ten episode order, it is titled The Conners and it's set to premiere this fall!

As we discussed when we first learned that a spinoff was in the works at ABC, bringing the cast back for a show that doesn't feature Barr as a creative force is certainly a way to make sure others don't suffer for the actions she alone is responsible for. But the rest of the Roseanne cast will return, including Sara Gilbert (as Darlene), John Goodman (Dan), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Lecy Goranson (Becky) and Michael Fishman (DJ).

The Conners is slated to debut this fall with a 10 episode season, and take over the 8 p.m. Tuesday time period on ABC that was previously reserved for Roseanne.

'I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne, ' the 65-year-old said.

"I feel devastated, not for the end of the Roseanne show, but for all those who poured their hearts and souls into our jobs, and the audience that welcomed us into their homes", Michael Fishman, who returned as character DJ Conner in the Roseanne revival, said. "We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter".

The network cancelled Roseanne in May, immediately after Ms Barr posted a racist tweet. The executives stressed that Barr will have no financial or creative interest in the new show.

A new "Roseanne" spinoff called "The Conners" (working title) is headed to ABC.

Barr had a long history of making offensive statements on Twitter prior ABC's decision a year ago to order a revival of the long-running family sitcom, which first aired on ABC from 1988 to 1997.

Gilbert, Tom Werner, Bruce Helford, Dave Caplan, Bruce Rasmussen and Tony Hernandez will serve as executive producers on the spin-off, which hails from Werner Entertainment. Barr also released her own statement giving the Roseanne reboot her seal of approval.

The show drew an average of 18.7 million viewers, second only to CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory, according to Nielsen data through to May 20. Barr was featured prominently last month at the network's joint upfront presentation with cable channel Freeform, where she introduced Disney-ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood.
