Aussies in rankings low before crucial ODI

Australian cricket captain Tim Paine gets stitches after hit in ODI loss to England

Woakes will not be available before the India Royal London ODI series in mid-July but is hoping to be fit to face India in next month's one-day worldwide series - even though England have described his knee injury as "chronic".

England is leading the five-match series by 2-0 and will look to seal the deal while facing Australia in the third ODI on June 19.

The team has tumbled down to the sixth position after losing the opening two fixtures of the ongoing five-match series against England.

England duo Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes have both been ruled out for the remainder of the side's one-day series with Australia.

Woakes has a right quad tear and will be out until at least the ODIs against India, which start on 12 July.

Chris Woakes is in a fight to be fit for the first Test against India due to a chronic knee injury which has shown the risk modern players run of going from the IPL straight into a Test series. As their top-ranked ODI bowler, and easily most impressive white-ball seamer in Australia and New Zealand, he has the responsibility for bowling at the start and end of the innings; areas that have been exposed a little in the defeat against Scotland and, at times, during the victory over Australia in Cardiff.

The pair have both been out of action since the Test series against Pakistan concluded at Headingley, a match which Stokes missed with a hamstring tear sustained in the build-up.

Captain Eoin Morgan missed the second ODI with back spasm, but appears set to return after making it through training on Monday.

The plan is for him to continue his rehabilitation programme with the England squad during the fourth and fifth ODIs against Australia at the Riverside and Old Trafford.

Australia have arrived in Nottingham at one of the lowest points in their ODI history as they desperately try to keep their series against England alive at Trent Bridge.
