Hartley cleared for qualifying after scary crash in final practice

Brendon Hartley has a massive accident during Practice 3 of the British GP from Silverstone.

Hartley was speeding down Silverstone's Wellington Straight at around 200mph when his front-left suspension buckled as he hit the brake into Brooklands, removing the tyre, and he was merely a passenger as the vehicle went into the gravel and into a big impact with the barrier. The front end of his auto was wrecked.

While Hartley was able to climb out of the auto and walk away from the incident, the session was stopped for 15 minutes to clear the vehicle and debris, while Toro Rosso kept teammate Pierre Gasly in the garage for the remainder of FP3 while investigations took place. On top of that, the team faces a fix job to ensure Hartley's vehicle is ready for qualifying, which starts at 2pm local time.

The incident also limited team mate's Pierre Gasly's running, with the Frenchman getting just four laps under his belt as the team worked to understand why Hartley's auto failed. When carrying out a low-fuel run, Hamilton posted a 1m26.722s to top the times by just 0.093s from Kimi Raikkonen as Ferrari looked a genuine threat to Mercedes ahead of qualifying.

Hamilton's mark was seven tenths quicker than his best effort on Friday and was the ideal preparation for qualifying, with the Briton chasing a record sixth victory at his home race.

Sebastian Vettel - who leads Hamilton by a single point in the championship standings - was fourth, followed by the Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.
