Listeria recall: Supermarkets recall frozen vegetable products following listeria warning

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued an urgent recall on 18 products this evening over fears they could contain listeria monocytogenes.

In a statement, Greenyard said: "This measure is taken in the framework of potential listeria contamination of frozen products produced in its Hungary based facility in Baja".

The Food Standards Agency said 43 frozen products, including sweetcorn and mixed vegetables - sold by retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl - had been recalled by Greenyard, one of the largest suppliers of fruit and vegetables.

The products include Tesco frozen broccoli, carrot and sweetcorn steamer, and Aldi four seasons four seasons frozen vegetable steamers, are made by Belgian firm Greenyard Frozen UK. The recall was implemented voluntarily by the company, ahead of any requirement by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

So far 47 people have been infected with nine of them subsequently dying in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and the UK.

A list of the 43 products recalled from United Kingdom supermarkets, which also include some from Lidl, Iceland and Waitrose, has been posted on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website.

This applies especially to consumers at highest risk of contracting listeriosis - such as the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems.

According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) 11 people in the United Kingdom have been affected by listeriosis since 2015, including two people who died a year ago. Kesko advises customers not to use the product and return the bags to any of its K or Kespro stores for a full refund.

Consumers are advised to thoroughly cook non ready-to-eat frozen vegetables, even though these products are commonly consumed without cooking (e.g in salads and smoothies).
