Something Big Crashed into Uranus and Changed It Forever

Uranus news Ice giant planet collision

The event might have occurred around four billion years ago.

Scientists from Durham University in the United Kingdom have modeled more than 50 different collision scenarios of Uranium with other objects in an attempt to restore every detail and the conditions for the birth of the planet.

This new discovery could explain the awkwardly named planet's freezing temperatures. An global team of experts has tried to understand what implications a massive object hitting Uranus in the past would have had. The collision was strong enough to affect Uranus's inclination, but the planet was able to maintain most of its environment.Research can also help explain the formation of rings and moons of Uranus, with the simulation this effect suggests that the rock and ice can be in the orbit around the planet.

Huge protoplanetary body the size of Earth in the distant past forever changed the space object in the Solar system.

Lead writer Jacob Kegerreis, Ph.D. from the Durham University Institute for Computational Cosmology, the researcher said: ' Uranus does spin on its side, its axis indicates on nearly flawless corners of all the other planets of the solar system. This collision is "pretty much the only way" that we can explain Uranus' tilt, Kegerreis said. Lead author Jacob Kegerreis, PhD researcher in Durham University's Institute for Computational Cosmology, said that Uranus rotates on its side in a tilting position, with its axis directing nearly at right angles of all other planets in the solar system. That would explain how the impact was enough to tilt the planet, but not enough to destroy its atmosphere.

This composite image, created in 2004 with Keck Observatory telescope adaptive optics, shows Uranus' two hemispheres. New research shows that Uranus, a chilly, hostile planet with a number of peculiar features, was the victim of a devastating impact during those early years, and it might explain some of the planet's odd personality. This could be a part of the reason why there are very cold temperatures in the planet's outer atmosphere. First, it could explain how and why some of Uranus' moons formed.

The researchers also believe that the collision might have helped produce the planet's rings of dust and debris, and maybe even its moons. Last year, a separate study also explored this aspect of the collision.

The team executed the premiere high-resolution computer simulation of varied enormous accident with ice giant to attempt to decipher how the planet evolved.

The simulations also suggest the force of impact created a shell of debris around the planet's ice layer, trapping all heat from its core. He also noted that the team aims to study Uranus' chemistry and the different ways that an impact like this could have affected its atmosphere.
