Two people dead in Sydney shooting, third seriously injured

Police officers were called to a house on Hull Road, off the Cumberland Highway in West Pennant Hills at around 5:20pm on Thursday evening after receiving reports of gunshots.

The 68-year-old man was the father of the children but did not live at the West Pennant Hills home, police said.

Police found the 68-year-old man's body in a home in a nearby suburb on Friday.

Gun laws are relatively strict in Australia, having been tightened after 35 people were shot dead with a semi-automatic weapon in the southern island state of Tasmania in 1996.

John Edwards was found dead the morning after he killed his 15-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter in a bedroom at their Hull Road home at West Pennant Hills about 5.20pm on Thursday.

'It's an absolutely horrific incident to unfold, ' Brett McFadden, acting regional commander of the north-west metropolitan region, said.

Police said there had been custody hearings over the two children.

"The nature of the relationship in recent times and level of access he had to the subject to the investigation".

Mr Edwards, described as a "recluse" by another neighbour, was a financial planner and volunteered with the NSW Rural Fire Service, Lions Club and Pennant Hills Junior AFL Club, according to his LinkedIn page.

The children's 36-year-old mother arrived at the house shortly after police.

'When police arrived, they found a teenage boy and girl deceased at the scene.

In Normanhurst, neighbours of Edwards described him as someone who kept to himself.

Forensic teams and homicide investigators have been combing the home all night for evidence, while the mother is recovering with friends after being treated for severe shock. "I can't even imagine the stress and the heartache that she is going through right now", Commissioner McFadden said.

"It's a awful, bad tragedy", the prime minister told reporters on Friday.

"It's a awful, bad tragedy".

"Our hearts go out to the mother and to all of the family. And just pray that those who have been so, so hurt in this - by this shocking crime, can find comfort in prayer and the consolation from friends and loved ones".
