Vacationers: Tropical storm could develop off Carolina coast

At 11pm on July 5 Tropical Storm Beryl was located near latitude 10.4 North longitude 44.0 West

Hurricane Beryl, now southeast of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean, is considered a small storm, creating some uncertainty about the analysis, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Earlier, the NHC described the storm as "Tiny Beryl" because of "its very small size".

On Friday, the National Hurricane Center upgraded a tropical storm in the central Atlantic to Hurricane Beryl, with top wind speeds of 80 miles per hour.

Forecasters said the storm is expected to dump heavy rain across islands including Dominica and Puerto Rico, which could also be hit with winds of more than to 40 miles per hour (64 kph) and flooding.

Tropical Storm Beryl formed as a tropical depression on Thursday, July 5. Its maximum sustained winds are near 30 miles per hour, and gradual strengthening is projected over the next few days. Dominica was under a hurricane watch and several surrounding islands issued tropical storm watches, with the strong winds possible by Sunday evening.

What started as a relatively quiet Atlantic hurricane season has quickly changed as two developments have occurred in the Atlantic over the past week. The storm is moving toward the north-northwest near 5 miles per hour (7 km/h).

"Beryl is expected to still be a hurricane when it reaches the Lesser Antilles late Sunday or Monday".

Hurricane Beryl trails only 1933 for the earliest forming hurricane over the open tropical Atlantic.

BEWARE OF MISINFORMATION: As you seek online information on these tropical systems, watch out for "hype sites" and provocative social media posts that only showcase the more dire computer forecast model solutions.

Another tropical wave, known as Invest 96-L, near Bermuda may also become a depression or a storm by next week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Beryl's impact on Haiti isn't clear as of Saturday morning. Forecasters say the storm will likely maintain its hurricane status as it approaches and crosses the islands. Less favorable conditions are expected to weaken the storm by the weekend as Beryl encounters much greater wind shear conditions and drier air being advected into the path of the system.

According to the NOAA, Beryl is now 1,140 miles off the coast of the Lesser Antilles.
