Trudeau speaks with supporters in Brampton, Ont., hours after meeting Doug Ford

Former prime minister Jean Chretien participates in an interview Tuesday

With more than 3,000 refugees in Toronto, the federal government will now organize the data collection and response to the asylum issue that the province had committed to previous year.

Today a spokesman for Ford said the federal government has encouraged people to cross into Canada illegally and continues to usher people across the U.S. -Quebec border into Ontario. "It didn't seem to me that the premier was quite as aware of our global obligations to the United Nations convention on refugees as he might have been, so I spent a little bit of time explaining how the asylum system works and how our system is supposed to operate", he said.

Ontario can not stop the flow of would-be refugees into the province, most of whom are entering Canada through an irregular border crossing in Quebec.

Ontario signed an immigration agreement with Ottawa in November of previous year. But Ottawa has for months hinted it could return hundreds of millions in revenues it will raise directly to taxpayers, and not to governments that oppose its plan.

Last week, Toronto Mayor John Tory said his city can not take any more asylum claimants and desperately needs help from the provincial and federal governments.

The federal government has said it will "backstop" any province that doesn't have a system in place, and has told provinces they must have submitted details of a carbon pricing plan by September 1.

Hundreds now being housed in college dormitories will be forced out in early August as schools prepare for students to return, the report said. However, Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, said that Mr. Trudeau's comments were "disrespectful" of him.

Is Ford right? He is, and Justin Trudeau needs to do something to fix it because it's getting worse daily.

Most Canadians would agree that crossing the border illegally into Canada needs to be stopped or controlled a little better. "The City of Toronto has been clear that we need assistance to deal with unprecedented numbers of refugee claimants and asylum seekers".

Trudeau sat down with the Ontario Progressive Conservative premier on Thursday for the first time since Ford was sworn in last week.

While the province has now made its position clear, Tory said in his statement, he's hoping the federal government will "fulfil its responsibility to help cities deal with these families". Tory said in his statement.

Verbal sparring aside, it's unclear what the Ford government's declaration could mean for Ontario municipalities - especially Toronto - that are already struggling to accommodate an influx of asylum seekers.

An official in Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen's office said that according to the United Nations refugee convention, Canada must provide services to asylum seekers, including shelter, while they wait for their refugee claims to be heard.

Now, it's unclear whether the new triage system can proceed without the provincial government's participation. "This can not continue and must be resolved".

Mr. Vaughan, the parliamentary secretary for housing and urban affairs and a former Toronto city councillor, said the federal government will have to step in with help for Toronto and other cities, while trying to create a co-ordinating system from scratch. That's in addition to the 20,000 asylum claimants - mostly Haitians - who flooded the border a year ago over fears that they would be deported back to their home country under President Donald Trump's plans to end their temporary protected status in the U.S.

The federal government recently doled out $51 million to three provinces - Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba - to compensate them for temporary housing of asylum seekers.
