Canada Heat Wave 2018: Death Toll climbs to 54

Five more people die of heat in Montreal, bringing city total to 33

Brochu said this is the first time he has seen the morgue so overcrowded in a normal situation; the only other time it has happened was during renovations. Nearly all were over the age of 60.

Neighboring Ontario has also been coping with high temperatures but no deaths have been reported there.

Unclaimed bodies occupy a significant amount of the 128 places available at the morgue, Brochu said.

The coroners have been asked to speed up the process of doing their examinations and quickly get in contact with families of those who have passed away. Brochu said numerous bodies examined by his team in recent days were in an advanced state of decay, having sometimes spent up to two days in the heat before being found.

Earlier, Environment Canada forecasted that the temperature will be 35 Degree Celsius but it will feel like 45 Degree Celsius.

David Kaiser, a physician at Montreal's Public Health Department, said most of the victims lived alone and none had access to air conditioning.

He encourages them to check on their neighbours, especially those who are vulnerable and often isolated.

Authorities in Quebec announced the death of 54 people because of a heat wave hitting the eastern part of Canada since the end of the past month.

Montreal previously raised the city's response level to "intervention" from "alert" after a spike in heat-related calls to the government's health information line and for ambulances.
