Del Monte 'small veggie trays' result in 212 confirmed parasite cases

But the number of infections has grown since then, and the CDC is warning that more cases could still be reported, because the cyclosporiasis infection has a delayed onset for symptoms of roughly one week and can last for weeks.

A previous major cyclosporiasis outbreak was reported in 2015, when 546 individuals were infected across 31 states.

The CDC said on Thursday that the outbreak is linked to Del Monte 6-, 12-, and 28-ounce plastic clamshell vegetable trays.

Six, 12, and 28-ounce trays in clear packaging with fresh broccoli, cauliflower, celery sticks, carrots and dill dip have been recalled.

This week's CDC update showed slightly stronger wording. Officials said two, in MI, came from vegetables bought in Wisconsin. As many as 54 cases have also been reported in Minnesota, along with a handful in Iowa and MI.

People who got illness range from ages 13 to 79 years old. If you have any of the vegetable trays in your home do not eat them and throw them away. Recalls were issued in June for those four states as well as IL and Indiana. All sizes had best-by dates of June 17 or earlier, so officials say there is little chance anyone still has any of the products.

The recall on vegetable trays sold at Kwik Trip and other location on June 15 has impacted consumers in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

"FDA has not identified which of the ingredients is the vehicle for this outbreak; each component of these vegetable trays is under consideration. FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays; the investigation is ongoing", according to the FDA's update this week. Cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness, can lead to diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

The time between becoming infected and becoming sick is usually about 1 week. Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur.
