Four-year-old girl with cerebral palsy takes first steps

4-year-old with cerebral palsy celebrates after taking first independent steps

- Defying doctors' expectations, a four-year-old MI girl with cerebral palsy has taken her first steps ever, all by herself. Ann Tisdale asked her daughter in the video, moments after she took her first steps. After Maya's procedure, the doctor informed Maya's parents that she would someday be able to walk but not without daily physical therapy. Maya says in the video posted to social media Sunday.

With tear-jerking levels of excitement and happiness, she then turns to her brother and says, "Look, I'm walking!"

"I'm walking! Yes!" Maya exclaims in the heartwarming video. The illness left her unable to stand on her own for more than a few seconds and required her to use a walker.

Maya was born several months early and weighed 1 lb., 10 oz. "We are beyond proud of our Mighty Girl".

Before she turned 2 years old, however, Maya was diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy.

"Maya still has CP", Ann Tisdale told ABC News. I can't even put into words how we are feeling. "She doesn't need or want help to do things. She's going to try to do it herself".

Maya previously walked with support.

After spending half her life in physical therapy, Maya had a surgery called dorsal rhizotomy, which involves cutting certain sensory nerve fibers that come from the muscles and enter the spinal cord, according to St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Maya's family stated that the procedure would reduce Maya's spasticity permanently and give Maya to live without much pain. "Because of her CP, Maya is now unable to stand on her own for more than a few seconds, or walk without the use of walker".

On May 9, 2018, Maya traveled from her home in MI to St. Louis, Missouri, to have selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery.
