Lions kill suspected rhino poachers on South African wildlife reserve

"They came heavily armed with hunting rifles and axes which we have recovered and enough food to last them for several days so we suspect they were after all of our rhinos here", he told the Sun.

It is not yet clear how many suspected poachers were killed.

"At about 4.30pm on Tuesday, one of our field guides on game drive alerted the Anti-Poaching Unit that there appeared to be human remains as well as other items in the immediate vicinity of the lions", he said.

The police also recovered the team's hunting gear in thick, thorny brush near the group of lions, including a high-powered rifle with a silencer and an ax, which was presumably for removing the horns of rhinos after killing them.

At the moment it is unknown exactly how many people were killed.

A May 2018 "60 Minutes" report revealed that they are being slaughtered at the shocking rate of three a day at the hands of poachers like the group killed in Sibuya.

"But the lions are our watchers and guardians and they picked the wrong pride and became a meal".

So far this year, nine rhinos have been killed in East Cape Reserves.

According to Newsweek, reserve owner Nick Fox said that there was evidence the hunters had been eaten alive by the lions between Sunday night and early Monday morning. At the same time, the handler heard a loud commotion coming from the lions, which she then suspected was the reasoning behind why the dog got her attention to begin with. "Investigation continues and at this stage we are unable to speculate as to how the remains ended up at the scene".

The six lions involved were darted (anesthetized) from a game viewing vehicle and their reaction to the vehicle at that time was closely monitored by myself, the veterinary staff as well as our conservation staff.

Sibuya Game Reserve in Kenton-on-Sea, South Africa is a popular destination that is home to Africa's famous "Big 5" - lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, and leopards - who reside on the reserve's 30 square miles. Someone had sawn off their heads and paws-body parts used in traditional medicine, like rhino horn.
