More than 200 sickened by parasite with symptoms including 'explosive' bowel movements

CDC Reports 212 Confirmed Cases of Cyclospora in Midwest

The CDC is recalling a Del Monte vegetable tray sold at Kwik Trip and Kwik Star locations after there have been 212 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in people from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and MI. However, illnesses that began after May 24 might not have been reported yet because of the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported, according to the CDC.

An outbreak of cyclosporiasis has resulted in 212 people in four states falling ill since May, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports, with seven of those persons having been hospitalized. The two cases from MI reportedly purchased the vegetable tray in Wisconsin and therefore MI is not impacted from this outbreak. Vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms may also happen.

Anyone who ate anything from any of the recalled vegetable and dip trays and developed symptoms of Cyclospora infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctors abut the potential exposure to the parasite. They range in age from 13 to 79 years old.

'Therefore, it is unlikely that cyclosporiasis is passed directly from one person to another'.

What are the Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis?

A recall was also issued in mid-June for the Del Monte trays, which included baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and dill dip, and were labeled for sale by Jun 17.

If left untreated, the illness may last anywhere from a few days to a month, or longer.

The 28-oz versions of the vegetable trays that were distributed to IL and IN were also recalled, on June 15.

The recalled products were sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers. Officials said two, in MI, came from vegetables bought in Wisconsin. More information is listed on the CDC website. FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays; the investigation is ongoing. The agency recommends throwing out all recalled products. If you have any of the vegetable trays in your home do not eat them and throw them away.
