PM Modi To Open World's Largest Cellphone Factory Near Delhi Today

Narendra Modi

Consumer electronics major, Samsung, has put the name of Noida in Uttar Pradesh on the top of the world map by housing the biggest mobile manufacturing facility in the northern Indian city.

Not China or South Korea - and certainly not the USA - the tag of housing the world's largest mobile factory has straight away put Noida on top of the world manufacturing map when it comes to consumer electronics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in who is on a visit to India will inaugurate the new 35-acre Samsung Electronics facility on Monday, news agency IANS reported on Sunday.

Established in 1995, Samsung India laid the foundation stone of Noida plant next year.

In 1997, the plant started manufacturing televisions, and in 2003, expanded to manufacturing refrigerators.

According to the report, Samsung's new facility will not only help in mobile manufacturing but also double its production capacity of consumer electronics like refrigerators and flat-panel televisions - which will further consolidate the company's leadership in these segments.

In June past year, the electronics giant announced a Rs 4,915-crore investment plan to expand the Noida facility. Demand for new phones is surging in India, helped in part by billionaire Mukesh Ambani offering $23 4G feature-phones, free voice services and cheap data plans. The total mobile phone market in India for 2017 was around 288 million, according to IDC data with 164 million shipments of feature phones in total. Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Corp. said in April it will set up three more factories in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will be landing together at a quickly prepared helipad adjacent to the factory, according to IANS. Officially the event will start at around 5.30 pm in the evening.

How many manufacturing plants does Samsung have in India?

. There's the one in Sector 81 in Noida, while the second is in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Samsung's Noida plant also has a Research and Development Centre, and there's is a design centre as well.

Samsung overall has five R&D centres in India. Numerous software products designed for Samsung's smartphones in India are developed by these R&D teams.

Moon, who arrived in New Delhi on Sunday on a four-day visit to India, is expected to meet Lee Jae-yong, the son and heir of Samsung's current chairman Lee Kun-hee, for the first time since he took power in May a year ago.
