Tayyip Erdogan assumes new presidential powers, tightening control over Turkey

Recep Tayyip Erdogan is due to be sworn in as Turkey's First Executive President with vastly expanded powers on Monday, when he also plans to announce his cabinet.

"In the new era, Turkey will improve in every field, including democracy, fundamental rights, freedoms, economy and large investments", Erdogan said in his speech at the presidential palace in the capital, Ankara.

The introduction of the new presidential system marks the biggest overhaul of governance since the Turkish republic was established on the ruins of the Ottoman Empire almost a century ago.

Erdogan would become both the head of state and government, with the prime minister's post abolished.

A decree published this week has already made changes to laws dating from 1924, just after the founding of the Turkish Republic by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, to 2017, removing references to the prime minister. During the ceremony, Erdogan pledged to lift the state of emergency in place since the failed mid-July coup in 20-16. The opposition described Monday as the day when a partisan one-man regime officially starts ruling Turkey. The coup was followed by a crackdown on members of the bureaucracy, judiciary, armed forces, police, media and academia, with more than 130,000 people dismissed from their jobs or arrested.

He won re-election on June 24, with 52.59 per cent of votes.

Erdogan has been in power for 15 years, first as prime minister, and then as president, from 2014.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Turkey's relations with its Western allies have been strained by disputes with the United States over military strategy in Syria and by European Union criticism of Ankara's large-scale purges of state institutions, armed forces, police and media following the failed coup. Ties with the United States and other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners also frayed, but Turkey remains crucial for any hope of stability in Syria and Iraq and managing refugee flows to Europe. Erdogan has prevailed in a dozen local, parliamentary and presidential elections. The lira has also fallen by a fifth in value against the dollar this year.

"There is no stopping for us until we bring Turkey - which we saved from plotters, coupists and political and economic hitmen, street gangs and terrorist organisations - to among the top 10 economies in the world", he said.
