Thibaut Courtois responds to claims he mocked Jordan Pickford

England celebrates after its round of 16 win over

Only minutes after playing a crucial role in Belgium's 2-1 defeat of Brazil in this evening's second World Cup quarter-final, Thibaut Courtois was keen to rectify a popular misunderstanding.

Jordan Pickford has become a national hero in England over the past week or so following his performances in the World Cup knockout stages.

Pickford said: 'I would not let that affect me. "And we have to be like that, I think, if we are going to get in the final, so we'll have to perform well and play well".

'Can I just say one more thing, ' Courtois said as his interview with BBC Sport was coming to an end.

"Pickford, for me, is the sort of prototype of what a modern goalkeeper should be", Southgate said in his post match press conference. I want to make that clear'.

But Southgate is already proud of the work ethic and unity shown by his squad after overhauling the squad with young players during his 22 month reign. I don't let anything like that (criticism) affect me. "I'm just a normal lad", he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"Jordan Pickford proved in the last game how big he is for this team and we will all be celebrating together", he said.

But Pickford surprisingly claims there is not much difference between England's fourth tier and the global stage, even suggesting that thriving in the lower leagues is actually more of a challenge.

He continued: 'I got a lot of games under my belt in the lower leagues, and I don't feel the Premier League or this (England) is that much different.

"In some way, non-league and League Two was the hard challenge".

The pair could yet meet again in the World Cup final with England to face Sweden on Saturday for the chance to reach the final four. Have your say by leaving a comment below.
