Tropical Storm Chris to avoid New England

LIAT continues to monitor Tropical Storm Beryl which is currently moving towards the Lesser Antilles

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center.

The tropical storm watch for Barbados has been discontinued as Beryl "no longer poses a direct threat".

However, a small craft warning remains in effect for Barbados until 6a.m. Monday.

The Barbados Meteorological Services reports that at 11:00 am today, Tropical Storm Beryl was 14.4N, 57.9W which is about 130 miles or 210 km to the northeast of the island.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Chris, is bobbing 160 miles south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The storm is forecast to intensify into a hurricane over the next several days but remain off the coast before zipping off toward Newfoundland late in the week. As a result, it is forecast to continue generating life-threatening waves and rip currents for the Mid-Atlantic beaches.

The storm was expected to strengthen to a hurricane by about 8 a.m. on Monday.

Elsewhere in the tropical Atlantic, Beryl - once a hurricane - has weakened substantially on approach to the Lesser Antilles.

N.H.C. said this morning that interests elsewhere in the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic should monitor the progress of Beryl.

But the National Weather Service said Beryl remained on track to move south of the U.S. Virgin Islands and across western Puerto Rico on Monday, potentially bringing 2 to 3 inches (5-8 cm) of rain and gusty winds to the U.S. territory still recovering from the devastation wrought previous year by Hurricane Maria. "Gradual weakening is anticipated during the next 36 hours, and Beryl is forecast to degenerate into a trough of low pressure as it moves across the Lesser Antilles and into the eastern Caribbean Sea by Monday".

About 7,000 houses and businesses in Puerto Rico still lack power after Hurricane Maria leveled an electricity grid that was ill-maintained before the storm.
