Boris Johnson resigns as United Kingdom foreign secretary amid Brexit dispute

Theresa May's Government was plunged into chaos on Monday following the resignations of Mr Johnson and Brexit secretary David Davis. In a brief statement, a Downing Street spokesman said: "This afternoon, the prime minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary".

In a major blow, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also resigns on July 9.

There was no immediate statement from Johnson, another loud pro-Brexit voice within May's divided government.

Mr Johnson's announcement came within 30 minutes of the Prime Minister speech to MPs inside the Commons.

It follows concerns raised over Theresa May's Brexit plan which she forward at Chequers on Friday.

Under her proposal, a treaty would be signed committing the UK to "continued harmonisation" with EU rules - avoiding friction at the UK-EU border, including Northern Ireland. Britain and the European Union agree there must be border infrastructure or checks along the now invisible frontier, but working out how to achieve that has been a major stumbling block in negotiations.

Rebuffing claims that her proposals make too many concessions to the EU, May said "this is the right Brexit" and would leave Britain free to make its own laws and trade deals.

Since cabinet approval for the plan on Friday, however, he had refrained from public comment.

Davis also said that May's plan "would be a risk at least of delivering a poor outcome".

Davis's sudden resignation on Sunday evening was much debated and discussed on Twitter the following morning.

Less than nine months remain until Britain reduces the EU's membership on March 29, 2019.

European Union leaders give the go-ahead for the next stage of Brexit talks, including on how Britain will continue to trade with the bloc after the split. The timetable looks increasingly optimistic.

She said she and the two departed ministers "do not agree about the best way of delivering our shared commitment to honouring the result of the referendum" in which United Kingdom voters opted to leave the EU. May could survive a leadership challenge if Johnson or Davis decide to try to unseat her.

His resignation was announced hours after Brexit Secretary David Davis quit his role in the government.

Prime Minister Theresa May has defended her Brexit plans.

Johnson, who favours a stronger break with the European Union, said in his resignation letter that Britain is "truly headed for the status of [EU] colony". Half an hour later at the dispatch box, the prime minister said she wanted to "recognise the passion" shown by Mr Johnson in promoting a "global Britain to the world". "But I'm getting on with delivering what the British people want". "I'd have to do something I didn't believe in", he told the BBC. "That's not a tenable position".

The prime minister earlier faced down backbench critics at a meeting of the 1922 committee, amid rumours they were close to getting the 48 signatures needed to trigger a no-confidence vote that could have removed her as prime minister. Jacob Rees-Mogg, who leads a bloc of Brexit-supporting Conservative MPs in Parliament, urged May to give up on the plan. He urged May to abandon her plans and take a tougher line with Brussels.
