Cavanaugh and Hardiman are Trump's leading SCOTUS picks, internet betting site says

The Supreme Court is seen in Washington. Recent presidents have delighted in dramatically revealing the peop

On Monday night, President Donald Trump will end the suspense; on prime-time television he'll announce who his SCOTUS nominee is for the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Justice Anthony Kennedy.

President Donald Trump shakes hands with Judge Brett Kavanaugh his Supreme Court nominee, in the East Room of the White House, Monday, July 9, 2018, in Washington. In anticipation of Trump filling the vacancy left by the retiring Anthony Kennedy - widely considered to be the court's "swing vote" - with a judge thought to have more conservative bona fides, many outside advocacy groups are already bracing for what will likely be a contentious confirmation battle.

The candidates under consideration are: Thomas Hardiman, Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge as finalists.

Hardiman is a "late addition" to Trump's final four, per the New York Times, but he was the runner-up to Justice Neil Gorsuch past year.

During an interview with ABC News over the weekend, Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal accused President Trump of being a "puppet" for allowing the conservative organizations to provide him with a list of qualified Supreme Court candidates.

While the president has been pondering his choice, his aides have been preparing for what is expected to be a tough confirmation fight.

Casey says he is "pro-life", but regularly sides with supporters of abortion rights in Senate votes.

Still, Trump has recounted how close he came to selecting Hardiman, who was recommended by the president's sister and sometime confidante, retired federal judge Maryanne Trump Barry.

Trump has enjoyed teasing details of his process in recent days, saying Thursday that he was down to four people and "of the four people, I have it down to three or two". Without Republican defections, however, Senate rules leave Democrats with scant options to block confirmation of Trump's nominee.

Barrett has served as a former Notre Dame University law professor and law clerk to former Justice Antonin Scalia. She's just been a federal judge for about a year. "I think that pick was incredibly brilliant on the president's part, and I think he's lived up to that".

He is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School. Trump says the new justice should have a great intellect and the right temperament.

The potential Supreme Court justice sided against net neutrality in a 2017 dissent, arguing that it was "one of the most consequential regulations ever issued by any executive or independent agency in the history of the United States". "Barrett said she tends to agree "with those who say that a justice's duty is to the Constitution", rather than a precedent she thinks is clearly in conflict with it". He is also a George W. Bush appointment to the federal bench.

During an appearance on MetroNews "Talkline", Capito said she wants Trump to nominate a judge similar to Gorsuch, who she voted to confirm past year.

"I'm open to voting yes".
