Countdown withdraws frozen veggie product after Australian recall

Deadly bacteria fears: Supermarkets recall frozen vegetables

Australia has become caught up in a European food scare, with supermarkets across the country recalling bags of frozen vegetables over fears they may contain a deadly bacteria.

The specific packets that are of risk of listeria contamination include mixed carrot, corn, broccoli, peas packets stocked under three brands: Black & Gold, Market Fare and Bell Farms.

But after the 44 products were recalled - Lidl has now issued another recall for 640g bags of Green Grocer Carrots, Broccoli and Sweetcorn.

Food scientists and food safety experts say a common misconception that it is safe to eat vegetables while they are still frozen has contributed to an Australia-wide product recall announced on Monday.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand have recalled nine products - a mix of corn, carrot, pea and broccoli ranges - that originated from Britain, Belgium and Hungary.

Listeria is a life-threatening illness for certain people, particularly those over the age of 60.

Listeriosis starts with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, and sometimes diarrhoea.

The elderly, pregnant women and their unborn and newborn babies, and people with weakened immune systems, are most at risk.

In February, six people died after a national outbreak of Listeria linked to a rockmelon supplier.

Sweetcorn is the number one suspect food that needs to be eliminated, but frozen beans, peas, mixed veg and peppers are also on the danger list.
