Fireball frenzy: 2 meteors spotted shooting across the US & Spain

The streak - which in at least one video seemed to be traveling along a curiously horizontal trajectory - was actually a fireball blazing a path over IL and Iowa, according to the American Meteor Society, and luckily a few cameras were rolling and pointed in the right direction to capture the event. The American Meteor Society says that fireballs are typically brighter than a magnitude -4, which is the equivalent of Venus's visibility.

Numerous people who saw it and either filed reports or commented on the site said they could see the fireball with the naked eye, while some said they saw it for as long as 10 seconds.

"The estimated 3D trajectory computed from the witness reports shows an shallow entry angle, one that could be associated with an Earth grazing fireball", wrote Vincent Perlerin for AMS. This would mean the fireball may have simply grazed on Earth at a close yet safe distance. Bush, who submitted the videos to the AMS described the fireball on his YouTube channel: "It was really hauling the mail as it moved from due North to nearly due East in about 13 seconds".

Fireballs are meteors that burn much brighter than average meteors seen entering the earth's atmosphere. Many witnesses, however, said the fireball disintegrated at some point. Most of those who have seen the fireball were people located in Iowa and IL. Other reports came from Minnesota, Indiana, Nebraska, Missouri, Ohio and MI - ten in total, including Wisconsin and Kansas. There was one report that came from as far as Cleveland and few others from Minneapolis to St. Louis.

It's not often you look skyward in bright daylight and spot a flaming space rock passing overhead, but that's just what happened over the USA and Spain on Monday, with meteor-watching agencies receiving a spate of reports.
