Thai cave rescue: Day three of operation begins

Thai boys trapped in cave

Phuwadech Kamnguen, a 14-year-old best friend of one of the trapped boys, said he's looking forward to eating KFC with the team again.

Heavy monsoon rains lashed the mountainous Chiang Rai region, where the Tham Luang Nang Non cave is situated, for several hours overnight on Sunday. Pairs of divers shepherded the boys on the long and painstaking journey out of the cave, navigating muddy and silty water through tight passages. Two divers accompanied each of the boys, all of whom have been learning to dive only since July 2, when searchers found them.

Hundreds of spectators and journalists have gathered in the area around the cave, hoping for news that the boys and their coach would emerge safely.

Pad kra pao, a Thai chicken dish, was said to be the first meal that the four boys asked for.

The official heading the Thai cave rescue operation says the four boys brought out of the flooded cave by divers on Monday are "safe and conscious" and now in a hospital.

Narongsak said Monday's rescues involving 18 divers and a support team of 100 had taken nine hours, two fewer than the rescues on Sunday.

A crack team of foreign divers and Thai Navy SEALs guided the boys during a nine-hour operation through almost 4 km (2.5 miles) of sometimes submerged channels from where they have been trapped for more than a fortnight.

Richard Harris gave the rescue mission the final nod of approval.

.

In an indication of how unsafe the journey can be, a former Thai navy diver died in the caves on Friday.

The plan laid out has been set to save four at time, leaving in doubt whether rescuing the remaining boys and their coach on the same mission will be possible.

"All conditions are still as good as they were yesterday", Narongsak told a news conference. "But there are caves where. explorers could go in and be trapped by rising water during like a heavy rain and trapped in an air pocket", Brick said. Four boys and their football coach are still in the cave. Thirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand's navy SEAL unit are taking part in the rescue operation. It's the experience of Tank Cave that Harris took with him when he was called this week to Chiang Rai, to assist in the soccer team rescue mission.

Monsoon flooding prevented the group from escaping and from allowing rescuers to find them right away.

The ordeal has riveted Thailand and captured the world's attention.

The current rescue operation is not, Tracy said, "the preferred option".

He posted video of divers escorting the pod during testing in a Los Angeles swimming pool.

American space entrepreneur Elon Musk tweeted that he visited the Tham Luang cave operation on Monday and Tuesday morning, and left behind a prototype mini-sub "in case it is useful" at the flooded cave where five members of a youth football team remained trapped.

Rescue workers wearing protection suits are seen as they wait for rescued schoolboys at military airport in Chiang Rai, Thailand, July 9, 2018.

"Got more great feedback from Thailand".
