UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson quits amid mounting Brexit crisis

The two departures shatter May's own proclamation of cabinet unity last Friday, when she believed she had, after two years of wrangling, secured agreement on Britain's biggest foreign and trading policy shift in nearly half a century.

Responding to Johnson's resignation, a Downing Street spokesman said: "This afternoon, the prime minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary".

May and her cabinet team spent Friday at Chequers, the prime minister's country house, discussing Brexit policy.

Johnson's resignation came shortly after David Davis, who served as the secretary for the Britain's exit from the European Union, stepped down from his post.

But most of the top jobs in government are now held by ministers who had backed Remain - including the new Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Davis's late-night resignation undermines May's fragile government.

In his resignation letter, he said the Brexit "dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt".

Opposition politicians were quick to capitalize on May's troubles.

"Theresa May's Government is in meltdown", deputy leader of the Labour Party Tom Watson said.

But in reality, she will be at the mercy of her party.

"If the Brexit deal is rejected by Parliament, then we, the people of Britain, should have the democratic right to determine our own future".

"I would be surprised if one [a leadership contest] is precipitated and if there is, I suspect she'd win it", he said.

She was not left in the clear by her MPs either, with challenges from hardline Brexiteers - with Peter Bone claiming campaigners had been "betrayed".

British journalist and writer Neil Clark told RT how there is now "incredible uncertainty" over how the United Kingdom will go about Brexit negotiations, given a "split" in the party over the country's future trade relations with the EU.

May does not enjoy a majority in Parliament, and governs only with the support of the 10 MPs of the Northern Irish Democratic Union Party (DUP).
