American woman celebrating wedding anniversary killed by stray bullet in Mexico

Tatiana Mirutenko 27 was shot while exiting a restaurant in the Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood of Mexico City on Monday

A San Francisco woman visiting Mexico City on her one-year wedding anniversary is dead after being struck by a stray bullet, reports NBC Bay Area.

Tatiana Mirutenko, a 27-year-old pharmaceutical analyst from California, was fatally shot leaving an upscale taco restaurant with her partner, James Hoover, and two other friends, in Mexico City in the early hours of Saturday.

Tatiana Mirutenko, 27, was shot while exiting a restaurant in the Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood of the Mexico capital at about 5:50 a.m.

Mexican officials say one of two men on a motorcycle fired the bullet and it was aimed at a bouncer nearby. "Today we were looking at flowers for the funeral", said Wasyl Mirutenko, Tatiana's father.

"We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased", the Bureau of Consular Affairs said in a statement.

Clemson economics professor Raymond Sauer said he doesn't remember many students from five years ago, but Mirutenko is an exception.

"She would give 200 percent", Natalie Mirutenko told the news station. As a mother, we always say things, but she inspired me to be better.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City confirmed the death. "I don't know how I'm going to survive without her, but with her memory and knowing how incredible she was to every single person that she ever came across, I will use that to incorporate into my life to be as great as she was to honor her memory".

"Out of respect for the family during this hard time, we have no further comment", the official said.

Earlier this year, the State Department rolled out a new tiered travel advisory system to warn US citizens of potential dangers while traveling overseas.

Unlike some other regions in Mexico that had Level 3 or 4 warnings, the State Department has assigned a Level 2 advisory ("exercise increased caution") to Mexico City "due to crime". Mexico state surrounds Mexico City to the east, west and north.

They described her "incredible work ethic" and passion for her job as news of her death emerged on Monday.

In a statement to KTVU the company said she will be incredibly missed and remembered her as a bright and passionate rising star and valued member of the team.
