Broadband speeds rise in developed markets but United Kingdom drops in ranking

It came ahead of 165 other countries, including Ireland (36th), Austria (38th), Italy (43rd) and Australia (52nd), said Cable, the broadband, TV and phone website that issued the findings.

With average speeds of 18.57Mbps, the United Kingdom is behind 25 other European countries and among the bottom third in the European Union.

The country with the worst internet is Yemen, which is 195 times slower than the internet in Singapore with speeds at 0.31Mbps.

"With average broadband speeds rising by 23 per cent in just one year it would be easy to assume an overall positive global picture", said Cable consumer telecoms analyst Dan Howdle. Similarly, while the United Kingdom is in the bottom third of European Union member states, its broadband speeds still come ahead of major world countries, including Ireland, Russia, Italy, Canada, and Australia. While the average speed also rose in the United Kingdom, it was by just 12.5%.

Of the 50 best performing countries overall, 36 are European, nine are in Asia and the Pacific, two each are in North America and South America and one is in Africa.

In a statement they disclosed that 136 countries failed to achieve average speeds above 10Mbps.

"It's been very interesting looking at the data for a second year running, not least because we have three times as much of it this time around". It is, however, somewhat sad to see the United Kingdom not faring better.

Our lower relative increase meant that several countries - Andorra, France, Luxembourg, Madagascar and Poland - leapfrogged the United Kingdom in the rankings.

Howdle said the UK's relatively poor performance was due to the fact that the country "has simply come too late to a full fibre - FTTP - solution" and added that "the United Kingdom is likely to fall further behind" ahead of plans to roll out fibre coming to fruition. "Despite plans to roll out FTTP to United Kingdom homes across the next decade or so, the United Kingdom is likely to fall further behind while we wait".

So who do we blame for this? The government? Whoever is in charge of this sort of thing should take note.

The failure of BT-owned Openreach to keep pace is reflected by its inability to roll out even fibre-to-the-cabinet broadband to large parts of London, let alone the rest of the country. We were six places above France previous year, and now we're 12 places below.
