DJI's next Mavic drone might have 360-degree obstacle awareness

There can be no argument that DJI produces some of the best consumer drones in the market today. And although the Spark didn't offer 4K footage, it came with smarts that made the drone fun and easy to use.

We have just received this photo of what would appear to be the first credible photo of the DJI Mavic Pro 2 in the wild, at this time we can not confirm its authenticity but it looks pretty convincing. Last year's Mavic Air then combined the best of both worlds, becoming what we consider to be the best travel drone you can now buy. DJI was supposed to have a "See the Bigger Picture" event on July 18th, but it postponed that to a later date.

The Mavic 2 designation on the drone is clear in the leaked image. The copter appears to have a sleeker and more aerodynamic design compared to the Mavic Air, but retains the basic character of the Mavic Pro in terms of shape and color.

Next to this "removable gimbal" also appears to be some form of portable electrical device featuring an Apple "Lightening" connector, perhaps the gimbal can now dock from the drone into a hand-held device, like the "GoPro Karma Grip" of the "Karma" drone package.

The leaked image had been acquired by DroneDJ, over a week before a supposedly big event planned by DJI that was pushed back. That's something DJI already offers on select models in its Phantom series. It might be because DJI plans for it to be used as a stabilized camera.

Clearly showing side obstacle avoidance sensors as well as the regular front facing sensors, the branded "Mavic 2" tells us the name of this product. DroneDJ published this photo that is now circulating the web, along with some speculation on how the new drone might compare to the ones we already know.

@OsitaLV - someone with a history of being on the money with DJI leaks - posted on Twitter a mockup of what they think that new gimbal could look like.
