Kim shatters LPGA scoring records, wins by 9 shots

Lydia Ko struggled for accuracy in the final round of the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic

Sei Young Kim has broken the previous 72-hole scoring record on the Tour, with a nine-shot win at the LPGA Classic in Wisconsin.

She can now overhaul Sorenstam's 72-hole record of 27-under par, set at the Standard Register Ping in 2001 in Phoenix, if she shoots a 68 or better.

"I feel like this is the best I've ever played", said Kim, who matched the LPGA's 54-hole scoring record of 24-under set by Annika Sorenstam at the 2003 Mizuno Classic - now known as the Toto Japan Classic.

"This is a dream come true", said Kim, the world number 26, whose only blemish was a double bogey on the par three 17th hole on Friday.

In case there was any question mark about Kim's control of this event she soon put it to bed with an eagle at her 3rd hole and an outward nine of 33 before all but putting the result of the event to rest with a homeward nine of 31. Then, at No. 9, she hit a brilliant approach to 5-feet and just missed her eagle, but tapped in for birdie to get to 28-under.

Kim, who made her LPGA debut in 2015, started by making four birdies on the first nine holes. It was his first title in seven years.

Tour, Korean American Kevin Na scored a six-under-64 for a five-stroke victory at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in West Virginia on Sunday. "I was hoping it would - sooner than later", Na said. I have more confidence after this week.

Na finished at 19-under 261 and picked up the $1.31 million winner's paycheck.

Kim tied the 54-hole record but another low round on Sunday allowed Kim to beat her own record and also to surpass Sorenstam's.

Yu Lu of China (63) is in second place at 12 under.

The only drama down the stretch was who would pick up the last spot to Carnoustie in two weeks.

"I had the double-bogey on 17". For match play, it's a course like this where you have to make birdies. That gave the final spot to Austin Cook. Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., closed at 14 under.

"Tough to describe how unbelievable this feels", Knox said. "After that, every hole I made really close to the pin". "I wish I could break up the (tour) record".

Aditi, who was T-22 after the second round, is now T-26th.

Defending champion Jon Rahm tied for fourth, while tournament host Rory McIlroy closed with a 71 and tied for 28th. She cruised from there with three more birdies. The victory was worth $108,000 and moved him from 101st to 24th on the money list. Just one of those weeks that everything is going in.
