Liverpool open Xherdan Shaqiri transfer negotiations with Stoke City

Liverpool transfer news Xherdan Shaqiri Man Utd

The Switzerland global is looking for a move back to the Premier League after Stoke's relegation to the Championship and it looks like Liverpool will be his new club.

Liverpool are confident of making Xherdan Shaqiri their third summer signing after opening transfer talks with Stoke City over the Switzerland global.

Speaking about his future earlier this month Shaqiri expressed his desire to remain in the Premier League, saying: "Of course, I would like to play on the biggest stage in football".

The diminutive winger enjoyed a mixed World Cup; one that was peppered with moments of footballing brilliance and political controversy as Switzerland reached the last sixteen of the tournament, eventually losing out to Sweden.

Shaqiri was a major coup for Stoke when he signed from Inter in 2015, but despite moments of brilliance he has never shown his ability on a consistent basis in the Premier League. He admitted that he would like to leave following last season's relegation.

Liverpool may be able to sweeten any deal by offering a player on loan.

The winger, who scored seven goals for the newly-relegated Potters last season, has a release clause of £13.5m.

His side take on League Two outfit Bury on Saturday before a midweek game against Blackburn Rovers.

They could have him in place to travel to the U.S. where they will play Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United later this month.

Klopp, meanwhile, remains keen to add at least one more attacking midfielder to his squad this summer. Liverpool have been trying to reignite a deal despite a hands-off warning issued before the World Cup. Fekir is now part of the French squad which have made it to the World Cup final.
