Ontario Woman Drives Stolen Vehicle for 2 Weeks Thinking It's a Rental

Neither of the cars required keys to start the engine instead using key fobs, which the owner left in the vehicle.

Police say the woman initially rented a black sedan from Enterprise in Cornwall in June.

According to Constable Tommy MacKay, who was the one called to arrest the thief, once shopping was done, she simply went out into the parking lot, "saw a shiny black vehicle, hopped in it and drove away".

It turns out the vehicle she thought was her rental was actually a 2015 black Infiniti QX50, a hatchback - which was obviously not the sedan she had originally rented. She mistook the mans 2015 Infiniti QX50 as her auto after doing her shopping and drove off.

Police say that both of these cars use key fobs to unlock and start the auto.

This allowed the woman to drive off, completely unaware that it wasn't her rental.

"She drove around and did her daily business in this stolen vehicle for two weeks", MacKay said.

It was the manager at the auto rental company who finally pieced together what had happened.

And it wasn't until this past weekend when the woman returned the vehicle to the same auto rental company that the manager pieced the entire situation together and realized what had happened.

The auto that the woman originally rented was a Nissan Sentra sedan. After contacting the police, it was confirmed that the Infiniti had indeed been listed as stolen.

Two weeks later, when the woman tried to return that very same vehicle, the manager clued in. They even tried to explain that the model she was trying to return wasn't on file but she apparently did not want to hear it. There were papers in the glove box and cigarette butts in the ashtray, and even a set of golf clubs in the trunk. "The manager observed the vehicle and asked the woman where she got it".

The manager, who was obviously confused, examined the Infiniti keys, noting that they weren't the keys to the vehicle the woman had actually rented. After they realized what had happened, the first thing they did was call the police.

MacKay said he has been an officer for 11 years and has never experienced anything like this, but is glad that it had a happy ending. The man whose auto was stolen found the entire thing hilarious, and gave a healthy "chuckle" when his vehicle was returned to him.
