Pompeo talks tough on Iran while visiting UAE

"It is expected that India takes immediate necessary measures in this regard if its cooperation and engagement in Chabahar port is of strategic nature", he said.

This was stated in as many words by Iran's deputy ambassador to India, Massoud Rezvanian Rahaghi, while speaking at a seminar on Emerging Challenges and Opportunities in Global Diplomacy and its Impact on Bilateral Relations with India, organised by the All India Minorities Front. The port is India's gateway to trade with Iran, Afghanistan and central Asian countries and will allow it to bypass Pakistan, which has denied New Delhi transit access.

Pompeo arrived for the summit in Brussels on Tuesday, and will meet with the three countries' political directors on Wednesday or Thursday, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed senior official with the US State Department.

In May 2016, India, Iran, and Afghanistan had signed a pact which entailed the establishment of Transit and Transport Corridor using Chabahar port for sea transportation.

He also said Pompeo was "very slowly to learn the ropes of diplomacy" by considering requests for exemption from the United States sanctions by the countries receiving the Iranian oil.

"We should strive to make this relationship more sustainable and durable".

The senior envoy said Tehran understands India's energy requirements, and added that Iran is still an open market for Indian requirements such as petroleum, urea and liquefied natural gas.

That push has driven up oil prices amid concerns that a divestment from Iranian oil would reduce the world's overall supply.

The Iranian oil ministry said last week that it exported 2.2 million barrels per day of crude oil in June. Washington later told countries they must stop buying Iranian oil from November 4 or face financial consequences.

Washington has threatened the countries potentially maintaining business with Iran despite the US's bans with "secondary sanctions".

Tehran has said the European parties to the nuclear deal, which are close U.S. allies, need to provide Iran with practical guarantees that its economic dividends from the agreement would remain intact with the return of American sanctions. "So the U.S. must abandon its policy of resorting to threats or use of force", said Mr Rahaghi.

The secretary of State's comments came as the USA steps up pressure on Iran after President TrumpDonald John TrumpMcConnell to meet with Trump's Supreme Court pick Tuesday Kavanaugh offers lengthy judicial record ahead of bitter confirmation fight Hundreds protest Kavanaugh's nomination outside Supreme Court MORE's announcement in May that he would withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran, which sought to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief.

Mr Rahaghi also suggested that a regional dialogue forum should be set up in the Persian Gulf and West Asia to resolve regional crises.
