Record-breaking Waratahs smash Sunwolves

The Waratahs face the Sunwolves

Brown's Sunwolves spent the entire second half of their clash with Gibson's New South Wales Waratahs with 14 men after Semisi Masirewa was red carded for a lifting tackle on Bernard Foley in Sydney on Sunday.

He says as All Blacks coach Steve Hansen suggested, he thinks players should be put on report like they do in league and then play on, with a yellow card being the height of things and if it's bad the player gets suspended after the game.

The Tahs have secured a home quarter-final, but Gibson sympathised with his rivals after the match-turning decision by referee Federico Anselmi to send off Masirewa for a unsafe tackle on Bernard Foley in the 39th minute.

Waratahs coach Gibson said he also felt a report system might ensure the game remains a contest.

Hot off a franchise-record 12-try, 77-25 blitz of the Sunwolves, the Waratahs have clinched the Australian conference and will be guaranteed second spot if they can beat the Brumbies at home on Saturday night during a fascinating final round.

"In that instance, the referee has no option, he's following to the letter of the law, that's what he's required to do".

"Then the game is not affected as much as it was tonight or in the All Blacks test against France".

"Having an intermediary step that's not quite a red card, give them some options, it's sensible".

Wallabies fullback Israel Folau returned from his one-match suspension to score a try double, while hulking winger Taqele Naiyaravoro went over for a brace to take his season try tally to 13.

Twelve minutes into the second half the game was done as NSW scored three quick tries to lead 46-18.

Reserve halfback Fumiaki Tanaka missed most of the final 10 minutes after he drove the head of Waratahs' counterpart Jake Gordon into the ground.

Naiyaravoro crossed in the 52nd minute to eclipse Folau's 2014 NSW season record of 12 five-pointers.

But they were devastating when they executed well, especially after the Sunwolves were undermanned.

Folau sprinted 60 metes for a try, but Sunwolves blindside flanker Michael Leitch brushed off opposite number Ned Hanigan.

From that point NSW dominated, leading 24-18 at the break.
