Wimbledon accept Novak Djokovic's request regarding Roger Federer

Roger Federer reacts during his stunning Wimbledon loss to Kevin AndersonMore

The South African eighth seed saved a match point in the third set before fighting back to inflict Federer with just the fifth defeat from two sets up in an unparalleled 20-year, 1415-match career, 2-6 6-7 (5) 7-5 6-4 13-11.

But after squandering a match point in the 10th game of the third set Federer's game frayed at the edges and an inspired Anderson powered back to claim victory in four hours 14 minutes.

But his run at Wimbledon might have come as a surprise even to Anderson, who had never made it past the fourth round prior to this year and lost in the first round of the grass-court event at Queen's Club last month.

The previously unlikely prospect of Anderson completing an unbelievable recovery appeared a more realistic possibility when he ensured the increasingly frustrated eight-time champion would have to go the distance to reach the last four.

This was the 32-year-old South African's first win over Federer in five attempts.

Defending champion Roger Federer has looked his usual confident and frankly unbeatable self thus far at Wimbledon.

Talking about the same while addressing the press after the match, Federer said, "I feel like these streaks just happen".

Roger Federer admitted he was shell-shocked as the Swiss star struggled to come to terms with his "terrible" Wimbledon quarter-final exit against Kevin Anderson.

I still felt like all he needed to do was give me a few second serves, finally pick the right sides again, things could change.

"Rafael and Roger are two very committed players in the sport", Toni said, as quoted on Tennis World USA. Anderson, meanwhile, eventually overcame Monfils 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/2) 5-7 7-6 (7/4) to set up a clash with Federer. His last semifinal appearance at a Grand Slam was at the US Open in 2016, where he lost in the final to Stan Wawrinka. The 16-time Grand Slam champion also won their most recent meeting - French Open semi-final 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.

"I think I had chances, I'm not sure exactly how many". Federer eked out a break point at 4-3, Anderson quickly snuffed it out, then Anderson served to stay in the match, and did so to love.

This was the first of three consecutive Wimbledon finals, where these two legends met.

'I don't think it really mattered, to be honest.

Anderson broke Federer to go up 12-11 and reached his first Wimbledon semifinal by denying Federer his 44th major semifinal.
