Aston Martin Resurrects Cygnet Concept With A V8 Engine

Aston Martin V8 Cygnet

Aston Martin Cygnet is probably the company's most forgotten vehicle of all time. Yes, that's right, the department usually responsible for elegantly modified, carbonfibre-bodied supercars has diversified into hot hatches.

Produced at the behest of one of Aston's customers, the V8 Cygnet struggles to hide its new powertrain - a 4.7-litre, 430bhp V8 lifted from the previous-generation Vantage S. Connected to the engine is the same seven-speed automated manual gearbox, powering the rear wheels by what Aston Martin calls a "very short torque tube". 'It is also a fine example of the engineering talent within the company as it's no small achievement to fit the Vantage's V8 engine so harmoniously into the Cygnet's compact body'.

With 333bhp extra on board, Aston Martin claims that the V8 Cygnet is capable of 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds - faster than the outgoing V8 Vantage S. Top speed has been clocked at 170mph. At the back, the Aston Martin V8 Cygnet gets central twin exhaust pipes, which is a bespoke system with twin underfloor mufflers and catalytic converters.

The interior is more focused. This means that in certain circumstances, the Cygnet's owner could even enter it in FIA-approved motorsport, if they so desired.

Aston started with the shell and body panels of a standard Cygnet, and a roll cage was welded in so the body isn't entirely overwhelmed with power. Starting life as a basic Cygnet, itself a rebodied version of Toyota's clever iQ city vehicle that was on sale between 2008 and 2015, the team at Q started by fabricating a new bulkhead and floor in order to fit an engine with almost five times more displacement than the original.

Itself already a marvel of compact vehicle packaging design, the V8 Cygnet is a rather different type of clever engineering, but inarguably more entertaining.

The custom hatchback, which will be demonstrated at this weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed, shoehorns its Vantage S-sourced 4.7-litre atmospheric eight-cylinder under the front bonnet.

The auto also stops more effectively thanks to 380mm front discs with six-piston calipers and 330mm rear discs with four-piston calipers, while the suspension set-up comprises independent double wishbones at the front and wheel. There's an FIA-compliant fire suppression system, and a Recaro racing seat in front of a removable Alcantara suede-wrapped steering wheel and a unique dashboard with the Vantage's instrument cluster.
