Dancing FBI agent, accused in backflip gunfire incident, can carry weapon again

Chase Bishop

The FBI agent whose gun went off in a LoDo bar appeared in court Tuesday morning where the judge allowed him to have possession of his service weapon.

The Associated Press reports Judge Fran Simonet ruled Bishop could be armed while on and off duty after the agent's lawyer argued that the Federal Bureau of Investigation "strongly encourages" its agents to carry service weapons at all times.

NBC News reports that a retired Federal Bureau of Investigation agent told the outlet that accidentally discharging a weapon would result in a, at minimum, three-day suspension without pay.

During Tuesday's court hearing, Bishop's attorney, David Goddard, said prosecutors had offered the agent a plea deal but declined to elaborate when later questioned by reporters.

Bishop was off-duty and on vacation when the shooting happened.

Chase Bishop, a 29-year-old Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, was arrested on second-degree assault charges earlier last month. Trying to be slick about it, the off-duty Federal Bureau of Investigation agent tried to pick up his gun, which discharged and wounded 24-year Thomas Reddington in his leg.

Bishop was partying at the Mile High Spirits and Distillery on June 2 when he started to show off his moves on the dance floor while his gun was hidden in his waistband.

Denver District Attorney's Office spokesman Ken Lane said toxicology tests on Bishop "do not support further charges".

Under conditions set by the court, Bishop is not allowed to drink or use drugs while his case is pending, the Associated Press reported. The video then shows the agent putting the gun back into a waistband holster and walking away with his hands up.

Chase Bishop, 29, was off-duty when he was filmed dropping his gun while dancing.

The bystander, Tom Reddington, was treated and released from a hospital. He hired a lawyer who advertises locally about large payouts he has gotten for his clients.

"It's freakish. It's beyond weird", Reddington told ABC News last month, describing the incident. At this point, there's nothing we can do to fix it.
