De Blasio fires back after border officials say he crossed illegally

Anthony Diaz Garcia has been captured again after re-entering the U.S. the Border Patrol says

The allegation appears to stem from a visit de Blasio made with about 20 other mayors to the Texas border on June 21, which was the day after President TrumpDonald John TrumpEx-FBI lawyer won't attend interview with House lawmakers: attorney Trump officials to release migrants with ankle monitors North Korea state media release photos of Kim at potato farm after Pompeo visit MORE signed an executive order to stop the practice of separating families at the southern border.

The mayor and his security team crossed the US-Mexican border to get a better view of a tent city holding separated migrant children, after being denied access on the US side.

Aaron Hull, the chief patrol agent for the Border Patrol's El Paso Sector, relayed the events in a letter he sent on June 25 to New York City Police Commissioner James O'Neill. An agent reportedly approached the group and asked if they had received authorization from a Border Patrol or public affairs officer to be in the area.

It cited claims by an agent that the group ignored his orders to stay put after he had told them of the violation, according to the Associated Press.

"The mayor crossed the border with the direct approval and under the supervision of the border patrol supervisor at this port of entry", Phillips said.

De Blasio, who has taken time away from his duties as mayor to protest the Trump administration's immigration policies, went to the Texas border with almost 20 other mayors from around the country on June 21, the day after President Donald Trump signed an order halting family separations at the border. The group allegedly included de Blasio and members of the New York Police Department.

Spokesman Eric Phillips rejected the claim that Mr de Blasio violated Mexican and United States immigration laws.

The accusations surrounding Mr de Blasio's border crossing come amidst continued controversy surrounding the almost 3,000 children who have been split from undocumented adults entering the US.

Border Patrol agents who were rescuing a distressed pregnant woman in Texas on Saturday were attacked by rocks thrown by illegal immigrants, officials said.

De Blasio went to a holding facility for immigrant children but was denied entry.

A spokesman for the Border Protection had no comment.

De Blasio has criticized Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy, even calling for the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Phillips had posted tweets of the mayor's visit on June 21. "ICE is broken, it's divisive and it should be abolished", de Blasio tweeted.
