Father fights for life and limbs after contracting flesh-eating bacteria in river

Angel Perez 60 contracted the disease while crabbing in a New Jersey river according to his daughter

The swelling started around scratches that Perez had on his right leg, family told WTXF. "It was swelling, it was blistered". Open cuts and wounds are another way for the bacteria to enter the body. With the prognosis still unknown, the Perez family is praying Angel leaves the hospital with his life and limbs.

Angel Perez' symptoms began after crabbing near Matts Landing in Southern New Jersey, NJ.com reports.

Officials say the best way to avoid the bacteria is to avoid raw shellfish, and to only swim in water that is regularly tested.

When a number of cases were reported past year in Alabama, Dr. Karen Landers, assistant state health officer for the Alabama Department of Public Health, told CNN that it's important to be "wound- and water-aware", especially during the summer months.

In other words, it's a flesh-eating bacterial infection.

Doctors believe that the Vibrio bacteria, which is often found in warmer waters where the river meets the sea, is behind his infection.

Perez was rushed to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was quickly admitted into the intensive care unit.

"They told us that his kidneys shut down and that he would need dialysis immediately", she said.

'The infection has spread to his blood.his skin. Doctors said an amputation to stop the infection from spreading to his vital organs is a possibility.

Doctors have put Perez on antibiotics and are waiting to see if responds.

As for Perez, his daughter says he and his family are relying on their faith to guide them through the situation.

'I have another family member that goes to that spot.

She said his limbs began to balloon within hours after complaining of severe pain and swelling in one of his legs. And then another friend of [my father's] that goes fishing there, he now has a baseball-size swelling of his elbow and that's where he's been going'.

Perez-Dilan said her father is not breathing well but on his own and is only able to slightly move his right arm - yet is in good spirits.

"He's been praising God nonstop", Perez-Dilan said.
