Injuries Reported After Plane Crashes With 11 People Aboard in Alaska

Emergency responders assist a passenger injured in a crash of a Taquan Air plane in mountainous terrain on Prince of Wales Island Tuesday

Mischa Chernick, a spokeswoman for PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, said all 11 individuals from the plane were brought to the hospital and being assessed.

The airplane went down on Prince of Wales Island, near Hetta Inlet, at about 2,000 feet of elevation, on heavily forested Mount Jumbo.

"Taquan Air has suspended all scheduled flights today and is cooperating fully with the NTSB, FAA and other authorities to examine every aspect of this event", it continued.

Two Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters rescued the 11 people and took them to a staging area where Temsco Helicopters, Inc. transported them on to Ketchikan.

A Coast Guard helicopter located the crash site and hoisted the pilot and passengers to safety, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Charly Hengen said.

Coast Guard commander and Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator Mike Kahle praised the pilot, who had kept the 10 passengers safe while landing the aircraft in the uneven terrain.

The De Havilland DHC-3T Turbo Otter floatplane was carrying 10 passengers and a pilot, according to CBS-affiliated TV station KTVA, citing rescuers.

Clint Johnson of the National Transportation Safety Board says preliminary information suggests that the float-equipped plane is in rocky, tree-covered terrain. Alaska State Troopers have identified the plane as a Taquan Air flight.

"It's a pretty good-sized rescue", Johnson said. All occupants in the crash are expected to survive, Hengen said.

Authorities say no deaths have been reported after a plane believed to be carrying 11 people crashed in mountainous terrain on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. The extent of those injuries is not yet known.

A Coast Guard rescue helicopter battled deteriorating weather and very limited visibility.

"The visibility is poor right now, so that's causing some difficulty in locating the aircraft right now", Hengen said.
