Kerber through to Wimbledon final after easy win over Ostapenko

Wimbledon

Kerber, 30, lost in the 2016 final to Serena Williams - and the pair will meet again if the American beats Julia Gorges in the second semi-final.

It may well be only her second Grand Slam appearance since returning from pregnancy, but she still possesses the mental strength of a great champion and after getting six rounds under her belt, her form is now looking back towards her best.

Williams was back giving the crowd a one-arm raised victory twirl after reaching a 10th Wimbledon final after her opponent swiped a lob behind the baseline.

Goerges saved a break point in her opening service game but largely held her own early on.

It worked. The 11th-seeded Kerber reached her second final at the All England Club by avoiding too many mistakes and using a seven-game run to seize control for a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the 12th-seeded Ostapenko on Thursday.

"It's such a great feeling to be back in the finals", Kerber said after the match.

The 23-time major victor is just one title short of matching the legendary Australian's haul of Slam title and she will contest the final at the All England Club for the chance to match her.

Five games in, Ostapenko led 3-2, and the numbers were still tilted toward her.

The left-handed Kerber was mainly a passive participant in the early going against Ostapenko. The Latvian plays an aggressive brand of first-strike tennis that carried her to the 2017 French Open title as an unseeded 20-year-old.

Young firebrand Ostapenko's 30 winners far outweighed the 10 struck by the wily Kerber but the 36 unforced errors she committed on Centre Court made for an ugly balance sheet.

Eventually, Kerber's style ruled the day. On the way to the last-four, she's dropped one set - against Camila Giorgi - in the quarterfinal.

The 29-year-old had served more aces (44) and hit more winners (199) than any other player in the first five rounds.

Kerber looked anxious and Ostapenko had a point to close to within a game but she dumped a backhand return into net and then coughed up two more errors to hand Kerber victory.
